Hello,I am having a problem where my monitor displays the message:Not Optimum modeRecomended Mode1280x1024 60Hzand the screen is blank asside from this message floating around. I have a Samsung SyncMaster 915N and a Gefore MX440 and Athlon XP 2500+ and 512mb of ram (can you tell the computers old?). I just installed Mint Linux 8 & before that I had Windows XP Pro. When I was still using Windows I sometimes would get this problem, và after I messed around for a while (unplugged cables, turned off and on monitor) it would sooner or latter be fixed. When I installed Mint I could use the "testing environment"

ok, but as soon as I installed the OS and rebooted the computer, then this message comes up all the time and I can"t see anything.I cannot press any buttons on the monitor, so I can"t access it"s menu.Does anyone have any advice or solutions? Thank you for the help.

Have you installed the proprietary nvidia-drivers if available via Hardware Drivers? If so have you run gksu nvidia-settings? Have you changed the resolution in Display settings?

I can"t see anything because my monitors isn"t working. How would I go about doing what you just described? I"m sorry I"m a noobie, even if my monitor was working I still wouldn"t know what to bởi vì what you just said, for example running gksu nvidia-settings. Could you elaborate or send me a liên kết for a tutorial or something?

Sorry you did say it was blank! At what point does this message kick in after boot, are you able to get to the boot thực đơn by holding Shift?

That"s right the screen is blank (accept for the message). It does this imidiatley when I turn the computer on. I think it"s a hardware problem since this sometimes happened when I had Windows XP. It"s just that after I installed Linux this happens 100% of the time.I turned my computer on & held down Shift & I don"t see any other screen.

Yes I would agree with you. If possible try another cable and/or kiểm tra the existing one for bent or missing pins. If you can try it on another PC with a different cable và it is still the same then the monitor is probably faulty, if ok it might be the graphics thẻ on your PC. Sorry but I don"t think there"s much else I can suggest?

So the display does display:That thực đơn message does allow you lớn use the menu buttons to adjust the resolution, unless it can"t get to the native (optimum) resolution due to the graphics thẻ interface that drives it
I have that monitor as well, good productI overdrove it at one point, & now have a xanh vertical px line about 4" from left side..http://reviews.cnet.com/lcd-monitors/sa ... 70753.htmlThe analog Samsung SyncMaster 915N comes cloaked in black with a set of six buttons tucked into the lower right-hand corner.Samsung syncmaster 912N an LCD, that only does 1280 x 1024 at 50-60Hz (an analogue LCD )-->edit: the other screen is a CRT Viewsonic G90FB, that runs at 1900 x 1200 at 75HzAlso check your graphics thẻ for dvi or card đồ họa output; if you have a thẻ that handles both types--since the CRT is analogue, it will need card đồ họa out or a converter plug as is available on some Nvidia graphic cards..Suggestions..Compatibility mode for Linux Vesa (VGA modes) Mode for Linux--or boot into windows and kiểm tra monitor settings againIt is not picking up the graphics thẻ power/resolution settings, so it is likely Cable--clean or kiểm tra pins--make sure power nguồn plug is seated--make sure đồ họa cable is seatedGraphics card--clean or reseat (wipe) contacts of graphics card (alcohol, not rubbing) will work or one of those alcohol swabs that are sold in drug stores, khổng lồ clean gold edge contacts

By seated, I actually mean reseat (pull the graphics card & reinsert), this helps swipe (wipe) the contacts, & can provide a better electrical connections: I also mentioned cleans the gold card edge connectors with alcohol in order to remove any grease or debris..--also, sometimes the cards are slight misaligned (contacts are not exactly perpendicular) lớn the bus on the board, this happens if the card is askew in the bus slot (PCI slot)

Is there away I can reset the password? I just installed the OS so there"s nothing I need lớn keep, but I"d rather not have lớn take the time lớn install it again.
